Last Wednesday, I attended a virtual portfolio workshop about ‘Standing out as an art student’. After realizing that I would become an art studio major, I attended this workshop because I thought that this would be extremely beneficial; I also would like to go into the creative side of marketing and the business industry so a portfolio would be great to have.

In terms of creating an art portfolio, they said it was extremely important to realize what effective storytelling is because you want to captivate your intended audience. They said that  we should only keep our best work on it and keep it concise because quality matters more than quantity. Furthermore, I learnt that a portfolio needs to change and be tailored based on your audience of job you’re applying to. From this, I learnt that I need to make a portfolio that encapsulates the skills I will need for my future jobs that I would like to pursue and to help me with that, they said to ask a professional that’s close to your field to review your portfolio and see what they think is strong.

Because I don’t have much experience in building a portfolio, they advised us to ask a local or small business if you could create content for them in exchange for you using it in your portfolio which I thought was really helpful. Not only did they give us art portfolio tips, they also gave us general tips; they told us to do more informational interviews and to find people doing what you want to do and learn more about their job.

At the end, we went into breakout rooms and I got to meet students from different schools who were also artists. This allowed me to practice networking and building connections through LinkedIn. I thought that this was really helpful as we were all in the same position where we are thinking about entering the art industry in several different niches so it was great to hear their perspectives and learn from their experiences.
